Comparison of Mental Health and Quality of Life of the Elderly according to the Provision of Mental Health Promotion Programs in Rural Areas

Abstract
|
|
|
Objective : This study aims to improve mental health and quality of life by providing a mental health promotion program for the elderly in rural areas.
Methods : It is a single group pre- and post-experimental study. The research tools were conducted at the Center for Mental Health and Welfare, and the Korean version of the Shortened Elderly Depression Scale (GDSSF-K) and the Korean version of the World Health Organization s Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF) were used. The general characteristics of the subjects were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests were used to determine the differences before and after intervention. The level of significance was set at 0.05.
Results : The depression score was significantly decreased after the intervention(change score: 1.44 points, p<.05). The quality of life score was significantly increased by 2.4 points after the intervention (p<.05).
Conclusion : In rural areas, it is difficult to use various leisure programs due to lack of infrastructure for the elderly. In this study, just participating in this program reduced depression and improved quality of life. Based on this study, we hope that various programs that can lead a successful elderly life will be developed.
